Abstract

Background: This study reports on community service activities designed to reduce antenatal anxiety through a Qur'an-based mindful eating programme implemented within the Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework. The introduction emphasises the high prevalence of anxiety among pregnant women and underlines the importance of interventions that incorporate Islamic spiritual and cultural values.
Community service partners: The activity was conducted at the Mondokan Community Health Centre with 30 pregnant women participating.
Methods: The activity was carried out through collaborative needs assessment, the preparation of educational booklets, and participatory workshops that included relaxation exercises, dzikir practices, and mindful eating techniques. The PAR approach ensured the active involvement of pregnant women in every stage of planning, implementation, and reflection.
Results: The results showed a significant decrease in anxiety levels, as indicated by a decrease in EPDS-3A scores after the intervention. Participants also reported improved emotional regulation, spiritual understanding related to eating activities, and confidence in coping with pregnancy stress. The formation of the Mindful Mom Community became a platform for ongoing support that reinforced behavioural change and increased community involvement. These findings indicate that the integration of Islamic values with a mindfulness approach is an effective and contextually appropriate strategy for improving maternal mental health.
Conclusion: Overall, this community service activity proves that PAR-based spiritual–mindfulness interventions are effective in improving the psychological well-being of pregnant women and strengthening community capacity, as well as opening up opportunities for the development of long-term follow-up programmes.
